Poor students in SoC
The whole school of computing has just moved to a new site. Despite of some small inconveniences of the new location (such as transportation, freezing and irregularly shaped office, no cellphone signal coverage, etc), one rule has been posed in every research lab - "NO FOOD OR DRINK ALLOWED". This is because instead of using plastic floor, light colored carpet is now covering every inch of the lab turf. I'm not sure whether the policy maker has also noticed the fact that, dark muddy footprints are already everywhere during the raining season, if so, maybe we will be informed to use our bare feet. On the contrary, I have never seen any food spread or drink spilling in the old lab. But ok then, Singapore has had plenty of places not allowing food/drinks (bus, mrt), just plus one place we're working for more than 8 hours per day, there is no big deal, really. This is not the end, though.
A few days ago, the head of the department disseminated an email clarifying this new policy, he said, he wants to use it to push students to the pantry where they can eat/drink and at the same time talk about their research with one another more. That is good. However, when we headed to the pantry, we all stuck at the entrance:

Somehow it reminds me of "NO DOGS AND ASIANS ALLOWED" in colonial days.
You are being tested. The sign crosses out the statement "No students". So, logically, the statement "No students" is false. Hence, all students should use this pantry freely. :)
Anon: No lah. You must remember that this is SoC. They using boolean operator:
False AND False = False;
Tough luck guys.
No pets, no students.
means if no pets, no students are allowed to get in.
:D
Here showcases the genius of our SoC students.. no wonder computer science students can do anything from a church paster to the prime minister...
I'm wondering who are those anonymous guys. This blog is usually viewed by only a few ones of my friends..
Dude, you have been tomorrow-ed. lol.
You post was showcased here:

Putting No Pets with No Student on the same sign is so insulting.
Personally I feel the SoC admin is one of the best in NUS. After feedback on the lack of handphone reception, they got the telcos to install a base station on the roof just in the second week of the sem. For that I wonder what was the previous Law fac doing.
And I'm sure the sign is just a simple misunderstanding. Perhaps you could just check with the admin rather than rant about it. My feel is that "Students" would refer to the undergrads, since it would not make sense to have a pantry for everyone. Hence you might want to check with the dean's office about it.
There was apparently a quiet change of SoC dean this semester. The news is encrypted within a news article on SoC's website... wonder why the change was done so discreetly and there was no announcement made to the students.
Anyway, being an SoC student I have to say that it really sucks. The new location is crap.
Ya man! You've been Tomorrow-ed. I guess we all get to know your site through there. Haha!
I soo agree with Anonymous' quote:
You are being tested. The sign crosses out the statement "No students". So, logically, the statement "No students" is false. Hence, all students should use this pantry freely.
Lucky for them it's not some Humanities department. ;)
I cannot believe it is true. At the first sight, I have thought that the announcement of "No PETs, No STUDENTs " is drawnned by yourself for a joke. What a person who can work out such signs!
I'm glad to see many anonymous friends here, though I didn't intend this post to be reposted somewhere else. I agree with anonymous#5 that SoC's helpdesk is definitely one of the best in nus. I love SoC where I meet my super nice intelligent adviser and learned a lot.
This post is supposed to be a half-joke. If anyone sees it as a damage to the public image of SoC, I'm sure you worry too much. Universities like MIT/Harvard have tons of such stuff each every year. Afterall, we're being tested, remember No+NO = ?.
No+NO=??? Is thats chemistry, sorry my memory is not helping me.
